Percy M.Ennist rescued Lawrence Maiello from burning, Walker Valley, New York, February 20, 1996. Maiello, 85, was alone in his mobile home after fire broke out on a back porch and spread to an adjacent addition, which was open to the home’s living quarters. A neighbor, Ennist, 52, field clerk, was alerted to the fire and immediately responded to the scene, where he found 20-foot flames issuing from the mobile home’s roof. After calling to Maiello and hearing a faint reply, Ennist broke open the front door and entered the living room. Despite intense heat, flames beginning to extend overhead, and diminished visibility in the smoke, Ennist located Maiello in the living room, then lifted him up and carried him outside to safety. Maiello was treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation and first- and second-degree burns.
