Paul Mark Gunby helped to save Patricia A. Erickson from drowning, Littleton, Colorado, August 5, 1983. After her truck was swept from a flooded bridge into Big Dry Creek during a rainstorm, Mrs. Erickson, 23, struggled toward one of the creek’s banks. Despite having only one arm, Gunby, 20, unemployed sales manager, jumped into the creek and, with his legs wrapped around a tree trunk, caught Mrs. Erickson as she passed by. With great difficulty in the fast, debris- clogged water, Gunby maneuvered Mrs. Erickson toward the bank, where a woman helped him remove her to safety. Gunby, nearly swept downstream himself, was then helped onto the bank by the women.
