Paul F. Rietzke III died attempting to save Kristine A. Staudt from drowning, Flemington, New Jersey, July 17, 1979. Kristine, 15, jumped into a turbulent area below a low dam to aid her brother, and both were pulled under by the backwash. Rietzke, 45, line inspector, waded to the edge of the deep-water area and, after the brother was washed out of the turbulence, jumped in to aid Kristine, whose arm had appeared at the surface. Both Rietzke and Kristine drowned.
