Paul Edwin Staton died attempting to save Jim Long from drowning, Mena, Arkansas, July 20, 1989. Long was thrown into the water when his canoe capsized in the Mountain Fork River at the base of a low-water dam. A member of his party, Staton, 42, assistant service manager, entered the river and swam to him. Both men struggled in the water and called for help. Long was carried downstream and reached safety, but Staton drowned.
