Paul E. Kennedy attempted to save Angela K. Shockley from drowning, Anniston, Alabama, July 5, 1989. Miss Shockley, 24, accidentally stepped into a flooded drainage ditch and was carried downstream toward a culvert by a very strong current. Standing nearby, Kennedy, 32, fork lift operator, immediately jumped into the ditch after her and also was carried downstream by the current. He became pinned against the culvert and could not free himself. Miss Shockley emerged from the other end of the culvert and ran for help. Rescue personnel and others who had arrived worked for about 45 minutes to free Kennedy. Miss Shockley required hospital treatment for minor scrapes and bruises, from which she recovered. Kennedy also required hospital treatment, for bruises to his ribs and kidneys and minor scratches, and he too recovered.
