Patrick McDonnell III attempted to rescue James Whooper III from assault, City of Industry, California, July 9, 1995. A man carrying a gun concealed in a bag approached Whooper, 50, in the mail processing and distribution facility where they were employed. As he pulled the gun out of the bag and aimed it at Whooper, another employee, McDonnell, 48, supervisor, immediately ran to the assailant from nearby. Before McDonnell reached him, the assailant fired twice, striking Whooper. McDonnell grasped the gun, blocking its hammer with his hand and preventing it from being fired again.
