Patrick Joseph McCabe died after helping to save David Kingsley from suffocation, Kittery, Maine, April 4, 1983. Kingsley was overcome by a deficiency in oxygen when a freon leak occurred aboard the submarine U.S.S. Jack in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. McCabe, 25, civilian pipefitter, descended a ladder with another man to Kingsley’s level, where they saw a sailor dragging Kingsley toward the ladder. McCabe removed the mask of his air supply unit and applied it to Kingsley’s face as the other man aided the sailor in dragging Kingsley toward safety. At the base of the ladder, McCabe and the other man collapsed as the sailor ascended to assist from above. Soon removed by others, Kingsley and the other man were revived. McCabe died.
