Patrick J. Moran, 26, telegraph operator, saved P. Henry Kittredge, 13, schoolboy, and attempted to save Anna B. Hester, 9, and Marian E. Sheridan, 7, from drowning, Clinton, Massachusetts, January 16, 1915. The ice on Coachlace Pond broke and allowed the children to fall into a strip of open water, 70 feet from the bank. Throwing off his overcoat and coat, Moran ran to the edge of the ice, which broke, and he fell in with the children. He was seized and submerged by Henry but freed himself and pushed Henry to the ice. Anna sank and was drowned. Moran swam 10 feet to Marian, got her partly onto the ice, and returned to Henry, but he was then too weak to get Henry or himself out of the water. He clung to the ice and held to Henry, waiting for help. Marian slipped back into the water and was drowned. When Moran had been in the water 10 minutes, a man came and pulled him and Henry out with a rope. Both recovered. 16162-1169
