Owen M. Hughes saved Reece Brown from being struck by a train, Home Gardens, California, January 18, 1976. When an automobile veered from the roadway, struck a pole, and stopped on a railroad track on which a freight train was approaching, the driver got out but Brown, the passenger, had sustained injuries and remained inside the vehicle. Hughes, 19, ran to the automobile and, with some difficulty, opened the passenger door as the train approached at diminishing speed due to emergency braking. Hughes pulled Brown to safety just before the train struck the automobile and inflicted major damage.
