Otis L. Frazier rescued James M. Stewart from burning, Meridian, Mississippi, July 27, 1968. At a service station, James, 16, was in a grease pit five feet deep on the bottom of which there was an accumulation of grease and oil. Flames suddenly appeared throughout the pit, enveloping James, who tried in vain to climb out. Frazier, 53, automotive mechanic, ran to the edge of the pit, grasped James, and attempted without success to lift him. After retreating briefly from the blistering heat, he again tried to raise James but could not do so. Flames from the pit lapped about Frazier’s feet, and the heat once more forced him back. He then jumped into the pit to a point behind James, who still was trying to climb out. Frazier was in contact with the flames as he took hold of James, boosted him out of the pit, and then climbed out. James and Frazier were hospitalized for extensive burns, and they recovered. 50350-5490
