O. Berval Hawkins, Jr., 15, schoolboy, saved J. Jackson Knowles, 14, schoolboy, from drowning, Mount Olive, North Carolina, May 7, 1927. While Jackson was swimming in the Mount Olive Country Club Lake, he got into distress 42 feet from the bank. Berval swam six feet to him, and Jackson grabbed him, causing him to be momentarily submerged. Berval freed himself and backed a few feet from Jackson, treading water. Another boy swam to Jackson, but Jackson grabbed at him, and the boy left him. Berval then grasped Jackson, and a struggle ensued. Berval freed himself with difficulty, and although much fatigued, he took hold of Jackson again and swam 42 feet with great effort to the bank.
