Noble Harry Neff, 23, core maker, attempted to save Alexander P. Barsan, 49, cupola tender, from suffocation, Salem, Ohio, February 5, 1929. Holding his breath, Neff entered the cupola and lowered himself to the coke. He passed the rope around Barsan under his arms and handed the end to men at the door of the cupola, and Barsan was pulled out. Neff took a breath and felt the effects of the gas, but he extended his arms upward, and men at another door of the cupola reached in and drew him out. He became limp and was dazed. He recovered in an hour or two. (See case of JOHN ALFRED SANDERS.)
