Nicholas J. Lamberti attempted to save Joanne M. Judge from drowning, Ocean City, New Jersey, May 27, 1970. While swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Joanne, 17, became caught in a strong current and was carried away from shore. Unable to swim against the current, she called for help. Nicholas, 17, college student, was swimming in the vicinity and started toward Joanne who, hidden by breakers, reached an area where the current was negligible and then succeeded in getting to safety unaided. Nicholas swam into the current, became tired, and was submerged briefly. Too fatigued to swim against the current, he called for help. A youth on a surfboard aided Nicholas to shore.
