Nicholas H. Lawlor attempted to save Patrick Lynch from suffocation, San Francisco, California, September 16, 1913. Lynch, 39, foreman of sewer construction, descended a ladder into a nine-foot-deep manhole to rescue a laborer who had been overcome by gas in a sewer. When he reached the bottom of the ladder, he too was overcome by the gas, and he sank down at the foot of the ladder. Lawlor, 35, laborer, descended into the manhole almost as soon as Lynch was overcome. He raised Lynch and then, being affected by the gas, climbed the ladder. Lawlor was assisted to a nearby hospital, but he did not enter it. Rather, he again descended to attempt a rescue two or three minutes after leaving the manhole, but he was again affected and climbed the ladder without Lynch. Lynch was removed from the manhole but died the following day. Lawlor was partially disabled for 13 days. 13224-972
