N. Kevin McCluskey, 13, schoolboy, saved Paul H. Flitton, 13, schoolboy, from drowning, Buffalo, New York, December 28, 1946. Paul broke through ice into water six feet deep in Delaware Park Lake. Thin ice extended from him for 45 feet to the nearer bank. Snow one-half inch deep lay on the ice. Kevin ran and walked on safe ice to within six feet of Paul and then broke through but climbed out. He crawled on his knees to within three feet of Paul and again broke through. After repeated attempts to climb out, more ice breaking with each attempt, he reached safe ice and climbed onto it. Removing his jacket and holding it by one sleeve, he tossed it to Paul, who took hold of it and began to pull himself upon the ice. Kevin then grasped Paul’s wrists and pulled him onto the ice; and they ran to the farther bank, their clothing having frozen when they reached it. 40917-3505
