Milton Lobel saved Robert B. Dishian and George H. Doll from drowning, East Paterson, New Jersey, January 24, 1942. Robert, 11, and George, 13, broke through ice on the Passaic River into water seven feet deep 150 feet from the bank. From the bank Lobel, 32, clothing manufacturer, who removed some of his clothing, ran on the ice, jumped into the water, and took hold of the boys. He tried to push George onto the ice, but it broke, and they were submerged briefly. Lobel again pushed George to the edge of the ice at least twice, and George tried to crawl out but could not. A man went onto the ice and extended a tree branch to George, but the branch broke. Another man pushed a plank near the hole, stood on it, threw an end of a line to George, and pulled him onto the ice. Lobel continued to support Robert until the rope was tossed again, and then they were pulled out. Lobel was nearly exhausted and somewhat nauseated, and he was disabled for a week. 39385-3252
