Michael C. Odill died attempting to save James E. Swanson from suffocation, New Berlin, Wisconsin, May 4, 1982. Swanson, 38, descended to the bottom of a manhole and immediately lost consciousness caused by a deficiency of oxygen in the atmosphere. Odill, 24, civil engineer, who was working at ground level outside the manhole, entered the chamber for Odill, but he too was rendered unconscious by a lack of oxygen. Although Swanson was revived and was aided from the manhole, Odill was found to have drowned in water covering the manhole’s floor.
