Michael B. LaRiviere died attempting to save Melvin J. McCracken from drowning, Rockaway, Oregon, July 30, 1989. McCracken, 20, was swimming in the Pacific Ocean when a current carried him farther out from shore. LaRiviere, 18, who was on the beach, entered the water and swam toward McCracken. When he reached a point near McCracken, LaRiviere told him to swim parallel to shore to get out of the current, and McCracken did so. LaRiviere was then carried seaward by the current, and he disappeared from view. His body was later recovered. McCracken was rescued by others.
