Michael A. Spingola helped to rescue a woman from assault, Basking Ridge, New Jersey, June 28, 1993. While at work, a 30-year-old woman entered her office, where a man armed with a gun was waiting for her. Pursued by the man, she fled to the hall but fell to the floor. The assailant aimed the gun at her and pulled the trigger, but the gun malfunctioned. One of the woman’s co-workers then pushed the assailant back into the woman’s office, allowing the woman to flee. Another co-worker, Spingola, 30, computer programmer, joined him, and they began to struggle with the assailant as the office door closed, locking automatically from inside. The struggle continued for a few minutes, until Spingola and the other man gained control of the gun, which Spingola then removed from the office. Police arrived shortly and arrested the assailant.
