Michael A. O’Gara, 33, patrolman, saved Mary C. Edmester, 62, from being killed by a train, Everett, Massachusetts, August 7, 1916. Mrs. Edmester started walking across a track on which a train was approaching at a speed of 50 m.p.h., and she stopped between the rails of the track. O’Gara passed under a lowered crossing gate 50 feet from Mrs. Edmester and ran along the track and on it to her. He grasped and threw her off the track and then sprang from it, clearing the path of the train when it was about 15 feet from him. The train did not stop. 17213-1486
