Melvin MacGill saved John W. Lane from drowning, Renovo, Pennsylvania, June 6, 1952. While swimming in the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, John, 12, schoolboy, became tired and was submerged briefly in deep water 150 feet from the bank and drifted in a current of one m.p.h. His calls for heIp attracted Melvin, 16, schoolboy, who ran 300 feet to the bank opposite John and lunged into the water. Drifting as he swam, Melvin progressed 175 feet cross current to John and took hold of him. They were carried downstream by the current as Melvin swam 100 feet towing John, who made an attempt to grasp Melvin and wrapped his feet around Melvin’s legs. Melvin kicked his legs free and called for help. He continued towing John 125 feet to within 50 feet of the bank. An older brother of Melvin reached them in water five feet deep and helped carry John to the bank. John was exhausted and was treated for shock at a hospital. Melvin was winded. 42584-3798
