Melvin Hagen died attempting to save Alma E. Summerfield from being run over by a train, Canby, Oregon, January 7, 1914. Hagen, 18, farmhand, was crossing a trestle with Alma, 16, and her sister when a passenger train approached them from behind. Hagen hurried the sister to the end of the trestle and then started back for Alma, who was still 65 feet from the end. The train was then within 350 feet of her, moving at a speed of 35 m.p.h. Hagen reached Alma, but before he could help her from the track, both were struck and hurled from the trestle and killed. 13802-1142
