Maura Jane Isbell saved Hugh Cunningham from suffocation, Stamford, Connecticut, November 12, 1985. Cunningham, 83, was in the bedroom of his second-floor apartment when fire broke out and filled the room with smoke. Disoriented, he cried out for help. Miss Isbell, 27, graphic artist, who lived in the first-floor apartment, heard Cunningham. She went to his door and found the stairwell filled with dense smoke. Repelled by the smoke on her first attempt, Miss Isbell returned to the stairs, climbed them on hands and knees, and, guided by Cunningham, crawled through the second-floor hall to him. She picked him up and carried him downstairs to safety. Cunningham was hospitalized for a week for smoke inhalation, and he recovered. 60771-7018
