Mary Pearl McSween saved Jerome P. MacMullin from drowning, Marion Bridge, Nova Scotia, April 1, 1948. Jerome, 3, fell into the Mira River at the edge of firm, snow-covered ice which extended 30 feet from the bank. Mrs. McSween, 27, housewife, who was in an advanced stage of pregnancy, saw him floating four feet from the ice in water seven feet deep. She ran 150 feet down a hillside to the ice and on it to its edge, where she knelt and tried to reach Jerome, who was unconscious, but could not. Fully clothed she slid into the water, grasped Jerome, and pulled him to the edge of the ice. A young woman who had followed her on the ice lifted Jerome onto it with aid from Mrs. McSween and then helped Mrs. McSween get out. They took Jerome to the bank, and he was revived. Mrs. McSween was chilled and nervous and suffered shock. Both recovered. 41384-3574
