Mary M. K. McMahon helped to rescue Jo-Ann and Hannah R. Margoles from assault, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, March 29, 1988. Mrs. Margoles, 34, and her daughter Hannah, 6, were in the rear seat of a parked van when a man armed with a handgun approached and opened fire on them. While the assailant was firing, Mrs. McMahon, 38, medical assistant, and her husband, who were stopped at a nearby intersection, left their car and ran to the scene to stop the assault. As her husband struggled with the assailant for control of the gun, Mrs. McMahon grasped the assailant’s gun hand and forced it to the ground, allowing her husband to disarm him. Arriving police arrested the assailant. Mrs. Margoles died shortly, and Hannah required hospitalization for her wounds, from which she recovered.
