Mary L. Huffaker saved Johnie M. Brown from drowning, Mineral Wells, Texas, April 17, 1931. While attempting to swim across the Brazos River, Johnie, 14, weakened and was momentarily submerged in water 10 feet deep. Mary, 17, swam from the bank to her, and Johnie immediately grasped her around the neck with both arms, and they struggled. After they were submerged three times, Mary placed her feet against Johnie’s stomach and pushed against her chest with her hands and broke the hold. Johnie was then dazed, and Mary got behind her and pushed her as she swam 12 feet to the bank. Mary was fatigued.
