Mary F. Groninger, 30, housewife, attempted to save Augustus P. Cooper, 11, from drowning, Aberdeen, Ohio, July 5, 1912. Augustus, who could not swim, got into water over his depth in the Ohio River, and Mrs. Groninger, who was fully dressed and could not swim, immediately waded to his assistance. When she was in water to her armpits, she caught Augustus’s hand, and he attempted to grab her head. As she turned to go to the bank with him, she got into water over her depth and went beneath the surface. She released Augustus, and he drifted away. Mrs. Groninger went beneath the surface about four times before a man arrived and swam out and got her. The man then swam out and got Augustus, who suffered no ill effects from his experience. 9043-792
