Mary A. McKinnon saved Florence M. MacKendrick from drowning, Campbellton, Prince Edward Island, February 5, 1913. Florence, 14, broke through weak ice on Wrights Pond 100 feet from the bank, where the water was six feet deep. She tried to get back on the ice, but it broke away. Miss McKinnon, 21, teacher, who could not swim, skated toward Florence, got on her knees when five feet from the hole, crawled to within a foot of the hole, and grasped Florence. She tried twice to pull Florence on the ice, but ice between them broke each time. She then succeeded in pulling her out, the ice sagging under Miss McKinnon, and water coming on it. 10187-1409
