Marvin Ray Griffith saved Mario S. Escalera from drowning, Denison, Texas, March 31, 1978. Escalera, 25, paralyzed from the chest down, was in the driver’s seat of a two-door sedan when, with a trailer attached, it rolled into Waterloo Lake. Marvin, 16, high-school student, was on the trailer and moved to the open window at the driver’s seat, holding to it as the sedan began sinking. Submerging with the automobile, which was in deep water about 120 feet from the bank, Marvin reached into the vehicle and took hold of Escalera. A very large air bubble from inside the sedan then was expelled through the window, aiding Marvin in getting Escalera out. At the surface, Marvin managed to get Escalera into a boat that was at hand, and in it they proceeded to the bank.
