Marvin Frank Henderson, 45, telephone repairman, helped to rescue George F. Fredrick, 34, engineer, from burning., La Honda, California, August 13, 1966. Fredrick’s sports roadster, with the top lowered, overturned and trapped him beneath the vehicle as leaking gasoline caught fire. Fredrick tried in vain to crawl from under the automobile and succeeded only in getting his legs through small space between the ground and the top of the door. He then called for help. Henderson ran to the side of the roadster where Fredrick’s legs extended outside. Flames burned beneath the opposite side of the automobile and under the rear end, where the fuel tank was exposed on the overturned vehicle. Henderson grasped Fredrick by the ankles and pulled until the latter was free of the wreckage from the waist down. Unable to move Fredrick any farther, Henderson called to his 13-year-old son, Martin Lee, for assistance. Martin ran to alongside his father. Each took hold of one of Fredrick’s legs and pulled. Fredrick aided by pushing. Their combined efforts rocked the overturned roadster, raising the side slightly. Henderson and Martin then pulled Fredrick from under the automobile. Fredrick rolled on the ground to put out flames which covered him above the waist. Henderson aided by beating the flames with his hands, sustaining some burns. Fredrick, who had suffered extensive bums, was removed to a hospital, where he later succumbed. Henderson’s hands healed. 49854-5377
