Martin L. Hoffman died attempting to save Alice E. and Kathleen M. Curry from being struck by a falling tree, Humble, Texas, August 20, 1983. Alice, 8, and Kathleen, 5. were watching their father and other men cut down a pine tree that had been uprooted by a hurricane and was perched precariously over their house. When the 60-foot-tall tree began to fall toward the girls, Hoffman, 29, welder, yelled to them to run away; he then ran into the path of the tree with his hands raised as if to catch or divert the tree. The tree struck him and inflicted fatal injuries. The girls were brushed by branches but received only minor scratches.
