Mark Richard Leppo saved Walburga Rockocy from drowning, Bel Air, Maryland, August 22, 1990. Mrs. Rockocy, 65, was driving across a flooded bridge that spanned Bynum Run when the swift current pulled her car into the run and took it several hundred feet downstream. Leppo, 29, letter carrier, saw the accident and drove along the run to where the car had settled, partially submerged, near the opposite bank. Leppo immediately entered the swollen creek and swam toward Mrs. Rockocy’s car, the current then taking him beyond it. After reaching the opposite bank, Leppo waded back to the car. He reached inside to unlock the driver’s door, then opened it and released Mrs. Rockocy’s safety belt. Leppo aided Mrs. Rockocy out of the car then waded with her to the bank.
