Mariana Turner Goldsmith, 12, schoolgirl, attempted to save Carrie D. Richards, 14, and Louise K. Brown, 15, from drowning, East Lake, Georgia, July 13, 1916. Carrie and Louise swam and floated in water seven feet deep in East Lake 75 feet from shore, became frightened, grabbed each other, and went under the surface. Mariana swam 50 feet to them, and they grasped her around the neck with both arms and went under the surface with her several times. A lifeguard then reached and separated them, and Mariana swam 35 feet to wadable water. The lifeguard and another man took Carrie and Louise to shore. Louise was unconscious, and Carrie was semiconscious, but both were revived.
