Margie C. Williams, 16, school-girl, died attempting to save Eugenia E. Neider, 16, from drowning, Vanderbilt, Texas, June 6, 1937. Miss Neider dived from a rowboat into the Lavaca River, swam, and a little later was observed treading water at a point 25 feet from the boat and 40 feet from the bank, where the water was eight feet deep. At her request for help a youth, who swam near her, supported her briefly and then left her and swam to the boat. Miss Neider continued to tread water, and she called for help as the youth climbed into the boat. Miss Williams then dived from the boat, swam 25 feet to Miss Neider, and facing her, took hold of her arms. Miss Neider flung her arms but did not take hold of Miss Williams. They remained in that position for a minute, and then both sank and were drowned.
