Margaret Ellen Leonard saved Vincent B. Gumina from drowning, East Brunswick, New Jersey, March 28, 1978. Vincent, 12, fell into a pond and, unable to swim, called for help as he was carried into deep water by the current. Mrs. Leonard, 28, schoolteacher, removed her shoes and jacket and entered the cold water. She swam to Vincent, reaching him 30 feet from the bank. He grasped her and caused her to be submerged briefly twice. Unable to break Vincent’s hold, Mrs. Leonard swam toward the bank with difficulty. A boy extended a pole by which Mrs. Leonard and Vincent were pulled from the water. 56120-6344
