Marcella Morrow saved Marie S., 4, and attempted to save L. Eileen Auwbrey, 1, from burning, Cincinnati, Ohio, February 9, 1917. Mrs. Morrow, 51, housekeeper, heard Marie calling her and went from the second story of her home to the basement, where the children lived. When she opened a door leading from the stairway into the room where the children were located, she found the room was full of smoke. She proceeded four feet into the room before she was able to see the children, who were on the bed, the clothing of which was in flames. She beat out the flames on Eileen’s nightgown and lifted her in her right arm and lifted Marie to her left shoulder and carried both children out of the room. She continued to the open air with Marie and then fainted, but without being conscious of doing so, she had dropped Eileen on the landing in the stairway between the basement and the first story. Eileen and another child were burned to death. Mrs. Morrow was burned on the face, head, and hands, leaving her hands badly crippled. 17985-1391
