M. Jewell Matthews, 20, student, saved John J. Edgar, 54, farmer, from an enraged bull, Alba, Texas, February 1, 1921. Edgar attempted to drive a bull into its pasture, and it became enraged. As Edgar ran away from the bull, it followed him and tossed him about 20 feet. He fell in a ditch, and the bull butted him several times on the chest and kneeled upon him, and he lost consciousness. Miss Matthews, carrying a broom, ran to a point behind the bull and struck it on the back several times. lt looked toward her and then turned and slowly walked away from Edgar. Edgar sustained a crushed ankle and broken ribs, but he recovered. 21191-1848
