Lynn Marie McGhee saved Jon R. Barker from being killed by a train, Machias, Washington, March 2, 1963. Jon, 2, was on a railroad crossing between the rails of the single track on which a freight train approached at 35 m.p.h. The engineer sounded the whistle and then, noticing Jon, applied the emergency brakes. Lynn Marie, 10, schoolgirl, ran 300 feet on the loose cinders of the roadway leading to the crossing and entered the path of the train when it was less than 200 feet away and traveling at a slightly decreased speed. Running on the worn and splintered timbers of the crossing, Lynn Marie scooped Jon into the crook of her arm. Without breaking her stride, she continued over the crossing, clearing the train when it was within 50 feet of her and moving at a speed of 20 m.p.h. The train stopped 750 feet beyond the crossing.
