Luther Grey Hinkle saved Adam K. Martin and Timothy C. Egolf from a possible explosion, Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, March 27, 1980. Adam, 5, and Egolf, 18, were injured when a helicopter in which they were riding crashed, spilling fuel from its tank. Hinkle, 48, veterinarian, ran to the wreckage and knelt on the fuel-soaked ground. A fallen power line nearby was arcing. Leaning into the wreckage, Hinkle removed Adam and carried him a safe distance away. Returning to the helicopter, Hinkle aided Egolf in getting out and moving away from the aircraft, which arriving firemen covered with foam as a precaution. Adam and Egolf recovered from their injuries.
