Lowell Miller died after helping attempt to save Marvin L. Miller from drowning, Thurmont, Maryland, July 24, 1995. Marvin, 12, was standing on a partially submerged rock that formed the bank of that part of Hunting Creek Lake, located within a state park, when he stepped into deeper water. He struggled and called for help. His brother, Lowell, 15, student, was on the bank with a friend of their family. They observed Marvin’s distress and, fully clothed, immediately ran into the water toward him. Nonswimmers, as was Marvin, they too began to struggle in the deep water. Members of both families responded to the scene, as did passersby and park rangers, but they were unable to locate the boys. Divers recovered them from the water, but all three drowned, Lowell having survived but for a few hours.
