Louise G. Griffin, 13, schoolgirl, helped to save Catharine Ford, 10, and Mary Daugherty, 10, from drowning, West Gloucester, Massachusetts, August 6, 1910. Louise swam 13 feet to the two girls, who were struggling together in the deep channel of the Little River, and was grabbed by them and taken under the surface. Two other girls subsequently swam out to attempt rescue, but they too were grasped. They bobbed up and down in the water, until a man reached the girls and managed to support Louise and three others. Two men arrived in a rowboat, and, while the girls were getting aboard, the boat foundered. One girl was drowned. Louise and the three other girls were later rescued by men from the shore. The men who had earlier attempted to help were also rescued. 6238-478
