Louis Johnson, 27, farmer, died rescuing Glenn R. Atchison, 29, farmer, from suffocation, Weeping Water, Nebraska, August 28, 1923. Atchison was overcome by fumes from an explosion and fell from a ladder to the bottom of a well, 34 feet deep. Although he feared to enter wells on account of gas and was winded from having run to the well, Johnson descended, tied a rope around Atchison, and started to ascend, but he was overcome 10 feet below the top and fell from the ladder. Atchison was then drawn out. Nearly an hour later Johnson was taken out, but he was dead. Atchison died a month later from the effects of the gas. 23691-1951
