Louis J. Hansen died saving John L. Staples from suffocation, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, June 24, 1929. Staples, 46, entered a 12-foot-deep sewer by ladder to flush out sewage, and he was soon overcome by gas. Hansen, 50, tannery yard foreman, who was standing on the ladder with his head outside, quickly descended to Staples and lifted him to another man on the ladder. That man raised him to a man at the top of the sewer. Hansen then was overcome at the foot of the ladder. He was taken out several minutes later by means of a rope but could not be revived. Staples survived.
