Lenore U. Hunter, 18, saved Annie L. C. Hobson, 7, from drowning, Beaulieu, Georgia, August 24, 1914. Miss Hunter, Annie, and six other persons were in a boat about 400 feet from the bank of the Vernon River, trying to reach the bank. Waves three to four feet high threatened to swamp the boat, and Miss Hunter jumped from it, fully dressed, to lighten its load, but the next wave capsized it. A man tried to swim out from the bank, but the current was too strong. A boy tried to row a skiff upstream toward the distressed party, but he could not progress against the current, and he kept the skiff at a point 100 feet from the shore, afraid to venture into the waves farther out. Miss Hunter took Annie on her back and swam about 600 feet with her to the skiff, aided by the current. The other members of the party were picked up by the skiff, and Miss Hunter, fearing that it would be overloaded, swam about 500 feet to a boat landing. She fainted as she crawled out of the water, but she recovered. 14145-1298
