Leonard Russell Gagnon saved Daniel J. Henri from burning, Oshawa, Ontario, July 12, 1992. Daniel, 2, was in a bedroom of his parents’ house when firebroke out in the kitchen late at night. A next-door neighbor, Gagnon, 25, driver, was alerted to the fire and responded to the scene, where he learned that Daniel was still inside the burning house. Gagnon broke out Daniel’s bedroom window with a concrete block and climbed through the window into the smoke-filled room. He crawled toward the bed and felt for Daniel, whom he found against the headboard. Gagnon picked Daniel up and returned to the window, where he handed him out to others. While exiting through the window himself, Gagnon sustained a deep cut to one foot, and he required hospital treatment for severed tendons. He also inhaled smoke and sustained abrasions to a knee and wrist.
