Leon Landrum died helping to save Darlene K. Henderson from drowning, Little Sioux, Iowa, June 23, 1974. When Darlene, 11, fell into the Little Sioux River, erratic currents moved her away from the bank as she struggled to stay afloat. Landrum, 50, service station operator, jumped into the river fully clothed and swam to Darlene, reaching her in deep water 10 feet from the bank. He took hold of her; but the currents caused them to be submerged briefly several times. They then went under again, and Landrum drowned. Darlene reappeared and floated inert at the surface. The currents moved Darlene to near the opposite bank, where others removed her from the water and revived her. 54031-6126
