Leo Peter Barsotti died attempting to save Joanne M. Judge from drowning, Ocean City, New Jersey, May 27, 1970. While swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Joanne 17, became caught in a strong current and was carried away from shore. Unable to swim against the current, she called for help. Barsotti, 21, sales clerk, was swimming in the vicinity and started toward Joanne who, hidden by breakers, reached an area where the current was negligible and then succeeded in getting to safety unaided. Barsotti swam into the current area and to beyond the breaker lines, where he was seen treading water and later floating with his head beneath the surface. His body was recovered.
