Leo J. Lockard, 12, schoolboy, died attempting to save John A. Roberts, 15, delivery boy, from drowning, Altoona, Pennsylvania, December 10, 1911. Leo, who could not swim and who was very heavy for his age, ran and walked over thin ice to the hole in which John was struggling in the waters of Mill Run Reservoir 30 feet from the bank, where the water was over seven feet deep. He extended an arm to John and pulled him partly out of the water, but the ice broke, and both went beneath the surface and were drowned. 8282-692
