Leo Daniel McCarthy, 22, electrician’s helper, died attempting to save George F. Cherry, 21, pipefitter’s helper, and Robert E. Henretty, 21, machinist, from drowning, Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania, October 17, 1919. Cherry and Henretty were washed over a dam in the East Branch of the Clarion River in a flatboat. They clung to the boat, which had upset and was caught in the backwash of the dam, where the water was 15 feet deep. McCarthy waded in water 18 inches deep on the breast of the dam 50 feet to a point opposite them, leaned over the edge of the dam, and extended his hand toward them. He was then washed over the dam, caught in the backwash, and drowned. Cherry and Henretty reached shallow water below the dam without assistance. 20014-1596
