Lee Roy D. Grimm, 26, salesman, died attempting to save Calvin L. Condray, 24, salesman, from drowning, Wyandotte, Oklahoma, May 6, 1951. A motorboat in which Condray and Grimm were riding in Spring River swamped and sank in cold water 15 feet deep 250 feet from an island. As the boat submerged, Grimm obtained a small life preserver cushion and threw it to Condray, who was a poor swimmer. Grimm, wearing a heavy mackinaw, swam eight feet through waves to Condray, who was holding the cushion with one hand and flailing the water with the other. Grimm took hold of a corner of the cushion and constantly urging Condray to be calm attempted to tow him toward the island. Grimm was greatly impeded by the waves and the weight of his clothing and in 10 minutes could progress only 40 feet with Condray and became fatigued. In an area of strong undertow, Grimm suddenly sank and was drowned. Condray was picked up by men in a boat and taken to the bank. He suffered from nausea and fatigue but recovered. The body of Grimm was recovered later that day. 42266-3742
